Shaving Cream & Watercolor techniques with tips for success

This week I'm sharing the swap cards my Flowerbug's Team made for our March card swap. The theme was to use a technique featuring ink refills.

Each one is fabulous!

This first card was created by Paula who used the shaving cream technique.  It looks a little bit like tie dye!

Tips on the Shaving Cream technique.  It's fun but a bit messy.

  1. Fill a container with about an inch of shaving cream. Your container should be large enough to fit the card stock you're coloring. *tip; cheap shaving cream works just fine!
  2. Smooth out the cream.  Add drops of your ink colors onto the cream. Take a knife and swirl the ink into the cream. Don't do this too much or you'll make 'muddy' colors.
  3. Lay your card stock onto the swirled cream and press lightly. Use gloves if you don't want inky fingers.
  4. Remover your card stock and wipe off the excess cream. Set aside to dry.
  5. You can use regular card stock or glossy if you have it.

She used Orchid Oasis, Parakeet Party & Tahitian Tide inks and regular Basic White card stock.

She even die-cut a few corner elements for the inside of her card. These dies are from the Fabulous Frames dies seen here

Next is a pretty card made by Ginny using the Best Day stamp set seen here.  She cased a card from the Jan-June catalog.  Check out the sample on page 67.  This is a great reminder that there are wonderful ideas in our catalogs!

She stamped the image on watercolor paper and colored it using our Water painters.  I believe her colors include Calypso Coral, Pool Party & Daffodil Delight.

Here are a few helpful tips for successful water-coloring.

  • Wet your paper before you add color. Watercolor paper is THE BEST for smooth blending.
  • First wet only the area you want colored; blue for example. Then dip your brush in ink you've added to a block or other slick surface.
  • I either press my ink pad onto a clear block or add ink drops to the block or a paper plate.
  • Saturate your wet brush in the ink and paint color onto the previously wet area.
  • Let dry before adding another color that touches it or they'll bleed together.

More techniques coming tomorrow!  Stop back in.

  • Two more ideas with the Border Basics dies

Continuing on to share team swaps featuring fancy borders here is a unique card made by Paula.  I would never have thought of this!

She used the Abigail Rose Designer Paper for her card front and the Basic Border dies for her lower edge.  The retiring Harvest dies seen here(discounted to $15.20 from $38) are the flowers on the front.  She cut the front flap with the dies as well as the back card base!  So cool!

The front flap is 2 5/8" wide.  Her card stock is Crumb Cake.  Love the brass butterflies inside!

Next is a pretty card made by Mary using the Sending Smiles bundle.  The stamp set & dies are carrying over into the new Annual catalog but they will no longer be a bundle at 10% off.

She used the same exact die as Paula did above; the Basic Border dies are wonderful!

Her colors include Fresh Freesia, Navy, Granny Apple Green and Daffodil Delight.  She also used the pretty Brass Butterflies on her card front.

The Designer Paper is the Hues of Happiness DSP from the Annual Catalog but it's sold out now.

See the Basic Border dies here:  I love these dies; they're so versatile.  Luckily they are carrying over into the new Annual catalog.

  • 2 more great card ideas with the Basic Border dies!

Before you get to the projects today I want to let everyone know about the current shipping delays. Stampin' Up! had their highest sales day ever on April 4th – by almost 20 times the average!  Wow!  They are quite behind and have added extra staff and longer hours to get caught up.  So if you're wondering where your order is, it's coming….it will just be about 8-10 days longer than normal.

This week I'm sharing our April card swaps from my Flowerbug's team. It's so fun to see what they make; everyone has their own unique style.  I LOVE swapping with them!

Annette chose the Beside Me stamp set for her card. She is a master at coloring and sponging.

Her colors include Blueberry Bushel, Basic White & Black. The Blueberry Bushel layer is textured with the Timeworn Type folder; the greeting die-cut is from the Stylish Shapes dies.

She cut two curves for her card; one with the Basic White layer and another with a Black layer.  She colored the image in with Blends markers.

Next is a neat card made by Karen who also used the Basic Border dies seen here.

She used the die to cut off the edge of her card and then used that second piece to create a 'vertical window' for her By the Bay specialty designer paper. This pretty paper is discounted on the Last Chance List.  See it here.

Her greeting and die-cut layers are from the Something Fancy bundle in the Spring catalog.  It will be in the new Annual catalog but no longer as a bundle at 10% off.

See the Basic Border dies here:  I love these dies; they're so versatile.  Luckily they are carrying over into the new Annual catalog.
