Shaving Cream & Watercolor techniques with tips for success

This week I'm sharing the swap cards my Flowerbug's Team made for our March card swap. The theme was to use a technique featuring ink refills.

Each one is fabulous!

This first card was created by Paula who used the shaving cream technique.  It looks a little bit like tie dye!

Tips on the Shaving Cream technique.  It's fun but a bit messy.

  1. Fill a container with about an inch of shaving cream. Your container should be large enough to fit the card stock you're coloring. *tip; cheap shaving cream works just fine!
  2. Smooth out the cream.  Add drops of your ink colors onto the cream. Take a knife and swirl the ink into the cream. Don't do this too much or you'll make 'muddy' colors.
  3. Lay your card stock onto the swirled cream and press lightly. Use gloves if you don't want inky fingers.
  4. Remover your card stock and wipe off the excess cream. Set aside to dry.
  5. You can use regular card stock or glossy if you have it.

She used Orchid Oasis, Parakeet Party & Tahitian Tide inks and regular Basic White card stock.

She even die-cut a few corner elements for the inside of her card. These dies are from the Fabulous Frames dies seen here

Next is a pretty card made by Ginny using the Best Day stamp set seen here.  She cased a card from the Jan-June catalog.  Check out the sample on page 67.  This is a great reminder that there are wonderful ideas in our catalogs!

She stamped the image on watercolor paper and colored it using our Water painters.  I believe her colors include Calypso Coral, Pool Party & Daffodil Delight.

Here are a few helpful tips for successful water-coloring.

  • Wet your paper before you add color. Watercolor paper is THE BEST for smooth blending.
  • First wet only the area you want colored; blue for example. Then dip your brush in ink you've added to a block or other slick surface.
  • I either press my ink pad onto a clear block or add ink drops to the block or a paper plate.
  • Saturate your wet brush in the ink and paint color onto the previously wet area.
  • Let dry before adding another color that touches it or they'll bleed together.

More techniques coming tomorrow!  Stop back in.

  • Super Easy Fun Fold card with free project sheet & video tutorial

Free shipping continues through Wednesday, December 11th.  All orders over $75 qualify.

I shared this simple but unique fun fold card on last week's Live video.  It's a great card fold and makes great use of your designer paper too.

It's called a back fold and is so easy to make! The greeting layers are adhered to the right edge of this card. It holds the left flap closed but opens easily since there is a scored line. I hope you watch the video below to see how it's done.

It features our Take a Bow designer series paper from the Holiday catalog.  I also used the Christmas Labels bundle for my greeting image and die-cut.

The White die-cut is from the set of dies but it was quite easy to layer a red shape under it.  I fussy cut the upper & lower edges to match. The green glimmer die-cuts are from the Winterly Tree Tops dies and our Festive Glimmer paper.

Below is the video I made for this card and another diagonal fun fold card. Both of these make great use of your designer paper!  I hope you watch and make some.

I shared this super cute fun fold card on last week's Live video. It has lots of layers but it's so easy to make!

Besides the bright, happy holiday colors in the Take a Bow DSP I love that this fun fold uses your cardstock efficiently. Each diagonally cut card base is one half of an 8 1/2" X 11" sheet of CS. I forgot to take a photo of this aspect but I do share it in the video seen here.

Below is a photo that shows how it opens and the pocket available for the optional gift card.

My colors include Real Red & Garden Green with White. The diagonal layers are also easy to do.  Start with a rectangle and cut it in half on the diagonal making sure you cut it to match the diagonal.

My greeting & White die-cut is from the Christmas Labels bundle which is on the Last Chance list right now. See it here.

The Red die-cut is from Greetings of the Season dies and the pine bough die-cuts are from the Winterly Tree Tops and made from the Festive Glimmer paper.

I added a double bow made from Red &  White Baker's Twine and Peppermint dots that are currently unavailable but will return at the end of December.  *They are NOT on the Last Chance list so they should be available for awhile!

I created a free project sheet you can print or download for this fun fold card. Click on the following link to get it.  Download Take a Bow November 2024

Below is the video I made for this card and another super quick fun fold card. Both of these make great use of your designer paper!  I hope you watch and make some.
