Shaving Cream & Watercolor techniques with tips for success

This week I'm sharing the swap cards my Flowerbug's Team made for our March card swap. The theme was to use a technique featuring ink refills.

Each one is fabulous!

This first card was created by Paula who used the shaving cream technique.  It looks a little bit like tie dye!

Tips on the Shaving Cream technique.  It's fun but a bit messy.

  1. Fill a container with about an inch of shaving cream. Your container should be large enough to fit the card stock you're coloring. *tip; cheap shaving cream works just fine!
  2. Smooth out the cream.  Add drops of your ink colors onto the cream. Take a knife and swirl the ink into the cream. Don't do this too much or you'll make 'muddy' colors.
  3. Lay your card stock onto the swirled cream and press lightly. Use gloves if you don't want inky fingers.
  4. Remover your card stock and wipe off the excess cream. Set aside to dry.
  5. You can use regular card stock or glossy if you have it.

She used Orchid Oasis, Parakeet Party & Tahitian Tide inks and regular Basic White card stock.

She even die-cut a few corner elements for the inside of her card. These dies are from the Fabulous Frames dies seen here

Next is a pretty card made by Ginny using the Best Day stamp set seen here.  She cased a card from the Jan-June catalog.  Check out the sample on page 67.  This is a great reminder that there are wonderful ideas in our catalogs!

She stamped the image on watercolor paper and colored it using our Water painters.  I believe her colors include Calypso Coral, Pool Party & Daffodil Delight.

Here are a few helpful tips for successful water-coloring.

  • Wet your paper before you add color. Watercolor paper is THE BEST for smooth blending.
  • First wet only the area you want colored; blue for example. Then dip your brush in ink you've added to a block or other slick surface.
  • I either press my ink pad onto a clear block or add ink drops to the block or a paper plate.
  • Saturate your wet brush in the ink and paint color onto the previously wet area.
  • Let dry before adding another color that touches it or they'll bleed together.

More techniques coming tomorrow!  Stop back in.

  • Heartfelt Hexagon cards with free printable project sheets

Today I'm sharing a few more cards made with the Heartfelt Hexagon punch bundle. See the first project here.

When creating this next card I chose to use the Delightful Floral designer paper seen here. I had a few large scraps in the package and created this card:

It's a classic layout that's perfect for using up those random pieces of designer paper you might have.  I like to layer one of the pieces to bring in another color layer; Pretty Peacock here. Then I simply added a layered Hexagon punch combined with the pretty Elegant Edge Tag Topper punch. You can see it here online.

My Lemon Lime Twist strip is 1" X 3 1/2" which is perfect for that delicate edge.

It's quite easy to layer the Hexagon punch.  Punch a second contrasting piece, cut it in half horizontally and add the stamped punched piece to it leaving a small border at the top & bottom.  You can see how this is done in the video below.

Next is an easy card layout featuring designer paper scraps.  This time I chose the beautiful All About Autumn specialty designer paper.  This has been so popular they cannot keep it in stock!  It's currently unavailable but should return the week of October 30th.

I featured the Heartfelt Hexagon bundle on a recent Live video.  Here's one of them:

It's a fun fold card that also has a gift card holder inside. You can see the Heartfelt Hexagon bundle here in our online store.  It's a cute punch bundle with a nice variety of greetings & more.

    Products used:

    • Merry, Bold & Bright designer paper
    • Merry Melody embossing folder
    • Deckled Rectangle dies

Below is a photo of the inside. It might be hard to see the gift card pocket on the inside left.  Scroll down to the other photo of the inside.  Isn't this greeting wonderful?  It's my favorite one in the set:

I made a second version on my video; but reversed the colors. I used Pool Party & Real Red.  Which do you prefer?  Watch the video here.

You can see how the gift card is slipped into the inside left pocket, formed when you fold back the card stock on the left edge.

Measurements are included in the free project sheet seen above.

Below is the video on this card and two others. I'll share the project sheets for the other cards soon.

  • Unique Christmas card swaps; they’re not your average cards!

Today I'm sharing the last of our October Flowerbug's Team Christmas card swaps.  These two cards are not your average Christmas cards!

First is a pretty card made by Marla.  She put together a unique color combination of Pretty Peacock with Moody Mauve and it works!

She chose two stamp sets for her card; Ringed with Nature and Vertical Blooms. Both are from the 2023-24 Annual Catalog.  The designer paper is the Earthen Elegance, also from the Annual catalog.

    Measurements:

    • Moody Mauve card base 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" score at 2 1/8" and 4 1/4"
    • Moody Mauve inside 6 1/2" X 3 1/4" score at 3 1/4" and 5 3/8"
    • DSP layers 2 pieces at 1 7/8" X 5 1/4", and inside back is 4" x 5 1/4"
    • White layers 3" square, 1 7/8" X 3" and 7/8" X 3"

Sharon made this super cute reindeer card featuring the Sending Cheer dies seen here.

Can you tell that the reindeer are upside down gingerbread men?  Rudolf is a complete die-cut but the Mrs is half.  She added so much detail on them too!

    • The 'hello' die cut is from the Rustic Crate dies
    • The antlers are from Autumn Leaves dies.
    • Ears are from the monkey punch.

She used the Joy of Christmas designer paper on the front, cutting it in half with the Border Basics dies.  A great idea!

The greetings are from the Horse & Sleigh stamp set (online exclusive).

Below you can see all of the Flowerbug's October swap cards.  Details on each if you go back each day this week.
